Readdressing the Built-in Groove Case with Deborah Howe
September 15 & 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This workshop is appropriate for adults of all skill levels. Maximum enrollment is 10. Deadline to register is September 1, 2012.
The reinforced case structure, which is distinguished by an inner connecting material between the spine piece and the boards, is known by many names and can have many variations and applications. Historically, it is seen on German bindings covered with paste paper. Today it is often used in conservation rebinding, as it gives the book a sturdy joint and custom fit case. In decorative bindings it can be used with variation and adapted to create uniquely visual structures. In this class we will explore both aspects of this style.
Participants will produce two bindings. The first will be a conservation style binding, sewn on tapes, with emphasis on the historical context and conservation approaches to rebinding.
The second book will be a design binding, link stitched sewn, where students can explore their creative side. Using a variation of the built-in groove case, the spine and board attachment will have a visually distinctive look that will be different then the classic quarter style binding. Demonstrations and discussions will include endsheet and headband construction, use of adhesives, and vocabulary.
Deborah Howe is the Collections Conservator at Dartmouth College Library. Previously she headed the conservation lab at Northwestern University Library for over 10 years. She has taught classes at Columbia Center for Paper and Book, the Newberry Library and currently teaches bookbinding classes at the Book Arts Workshop at Dartmouth. She is a long standing member of the Guild of Book Workers and on the board of directors of the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio.
