</span></p><span style="font-size: x-large; text-align: center;"><div><span style="font-family: georgia;">Sabrena Johnson</span></div></span><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Sabrena Johnson is the Conservation Librarian for <a href="https://library.tulane.edu/" target="_blank">Tulane University</a>. Alongside in-house special and circulating collections conservation for the libraries, she experiments on her own collection to develop bindings that reflect the contents in a way that shows character with a bit of lateral thinking. Book arts provide a meditative outlet where each book becomes distinctive, a unique object in its own right that breaks the rules wherever possible while giving the best aesthetic fit for the volume. Roy with whom I studied for 4 years. I later went to Paris to study gold tooling with Mr Arnoult, Ascona with Edwin Heims, and Solothurn with Hugo Peller. In 1987 I moved to the US to marry Don Etherington. From 1988 to 2000 I was chair of the Standards of Excellence of the Guild of Book Workers. My bindings are in many institutions and private collections.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">This is the catalogue of my retrospective exhibition in 2018 at the gallery of Guilford College in Greensboro. I used komihimo for my initials and onlays of different leather. The second binding is Clochemerle illustrated by Dubout. Onlays of lines and rounds, some with tooling to illustrate the atmosphere of the books. French technique of laced-in boards with edge to edge doublures with onlays and suede flyleaves.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_xtm12Be4aeBuDNLi3XNKF1EIZ_s8zCu8heCyaFNmOhUJBiTjTA7A6vq8HzuVz1I6nKxn9SZePlMUD3wMY0cjvdUO0dCrNjLMLg5CIU3PIDFRndwcyWDTKfYjNY_AhhSv2O08490QNYsf/s640/ml-3.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="640" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_xtm12Be4aeBuDNLi3XNKF1EIZ_s8zCu8heCyaFNmOhUJBiTjTA7A6vq8HzuVz1I6nKxn9SZePlMUD3wMY0cjvdUO0dCrNjLMLg5CIU3PIDFRndwcyWDTKfYjNY_AhhSv2O08490QNYsf/w400-h266/ml-3.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibnAIGUZRsX8d8Qp1UMsZAwJ_LEWDrYvQEcDXzESYKKFvDQ5MEE69lDz06m4isKEBg9iig3ZpE7NOGeIrtSc8td-ZkXXastEx45tmW7e15G8mFxPdtSMI7dVsO5Iw5yZ1XLhovkF9LtQpu/s640/ml-5.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="393" data-original-width="640" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibnAIGUZRsX8d8Qp1UMsZAwJ_LEWDrYvQEcDXzESYKKFvDQ5MEE69lDz06m4isKEBg9iig3ZpE7NOGeIrtSc8td-ZkXXastEx45tmW7e15G8mFxPdtSMI7dVsO5Iw5yZ1XLhovkF9LtQpu/w400-h246/ml-5.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwA-1-qPYAAOJRtyr6oQdrMFF_1HvVq7-7Gv4fehcX9mZuUBmAIApBB1dmtJiqhshHCmf-_ckj0lZvF2HvcJ1Tl7P3ZFqKRl9PUXI4IjaCxInpTBHvS8qWEnx8JcUWCiCZzp2MSSzKe0Ts/s640/ml-6-srgb+jpg+3000-2.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="640" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwA-1-qPYAAOJRtyr6oQdrMFF_1HvVq7-7Gv4fehcX9mZuUBmAIApBB1dmtJiqhshHCmf-_ckj0lZvF2HvcJ1Tl7P3ZFqKRl9PUXI4IjaCxInpTBHvS8qWEnx8JcUWCiCZzp2MSSzKe0Ts/w400-h267/ml-6-srgb+jpg+3000-2.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span><p></p>jillian maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03496998205815993158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7024499683172984625.post-6090663459229152102021-01-26T08:25:00.002-08:002021-02-12T09:13:28.128-08:00Karen Hanmer Workshop <p> <span face="arial, helvetica, sans-serif">The Southeast Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers invites you to join us for a 3 hour, online workshop with Karen Hamner on Saturday, February 13th from </span></p><p>9 am to 12 pm CST</p><p>10am to 1pm EST.</p><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><div>Cost for members $10</div><div>Cost for non-members $20</div></div><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Register at the following link:</div><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/online_workshop_with_karen_hanmer" style="color: #346da2; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" xcomment="target=_blank">https://gbw.formstack.com/forms/online_workshop_with_karen_hanmer</a></div><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Exposed Sewing with Decorative Guards and Self-locking Wrapper</div><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">DESCRIPTION</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">For centuries paper has served as a quick, elegant, and economical covering material for books. This class introduces a clever book structure and a versatile image making technique to create content for it. Students will produce pochoir samplers using Hedi Kyle’s pocket-link book design.<br />We will first cover a variety of ways to make atmospheric, layered images using hand-cut stencils, and put these pochoir techniques to use on translucent paper. During this step, there will be opportunities to collaborate and expand the variety of potential images by swapping stencils with others. The book will then be constructed with built-in pockets to store the stencils themselves, making them part of the visual interest and content of the book.<br />Hedi Kyle’s unique structural inventions, such as the pocket-link book, have had an enormous impact on the field of book arts, and this project is from her own teaching repertoire. Artists far and wide continue to be inspired by her masterful paper engineering and particular genius for transforming the architecture and action of the book. No previous experience required.</blockquote>

<br />
Baulos’s drawings, installations, and books have been exhibited/published both nationally and internationally. His current works are explorations (visual) and meditations (poetry) centering on his ideas of spirituality, love, death, shelter, and hope. Books, because of their exterior/interior format, as well as their sequential ordering, have been a life long fascination. The book as an object allows the viewer to be guided through a thought process as well as evoking time and journey/text and image in an intimate fashion. My books and installations hope to explode process into an embodied visual narrative, a sculpture of our inner life.</div>

“I’m interested in the distillation of a subject using typography and image within the book form. I revel in the craft of book art: the exploration of materials, and the effort to strike a balance between artistic and practical choices. Those processes involve intimacy and acute observation. That is ultimately what my work is about.”</div>

Using materials such as wood veneer and wire mounted onto a magnetic base, workshop participants were encouraged to try many different iterations of their compositions, capitalizing on the ease of setup of these modular printable forms. Each participant completed the weekend-long class with a suite of their own prints, a set of printable plates, and a copy of the collaborative class print.</span><br />

<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px;">
The <b>Southeast Chapter of the GBW</b> is sponsoring this all-day workshop for book and paper conservators, focused on several water-based adhesives, including wheat-starch paste, and two cellulose ethers, methylcellulose and the not- yet-common sodium carboxymethylcellulose. A short introduction to the properties of these adhesives will be followed by slides, demonstrations, and hands-on activities including preparing these adhesives, making pre-coated papers for repairs and overall linings, treating cloth-lined varnished maps, removing old adhesives and guards, and surface cleaning.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Lucida Grande', Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Small Craft Advisory Press hosted a Southeast Guild of Bookworkers papermaking workshop with Drew Matott (of <a href="http://www.peacepaperproject.org/index.html" target="_blank">Peace Papers</a>) over the weekend of November 7th & 8th. The workshop drew in participants from Tallahassee, and even a few from the Panama City area, to make paper during this two-day workshop.<br />
<br />
The premise of the workshop was "papermaking as personal expression." Drew invited each participant to bring in articles of clothing or other significant fabric to be pulped in the Hollander beaters. The beats started out with the bicycle-powered beater, but then switched over to an electrical motor for the remainder of the workshop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
All of the participants shared their pulp, so that everyone could make a colorful array of paper and experiment with traditional sheet pulling, layering pulps onto moulds by hand, and pulp painting.<br />
